SAMUEL ADKINS

I LIVE HERE

Robert G. Ingersoll's Vow

Filerobert_g

When I became convinced that the universe is natural-that all the ghosts and gods are myths, there entered into my brain, into my soul, into every drop of my blood, the sense, the feeling, the joy of freedom. The walls of my prison crumbled and fell, the dungeon was flooded with light, and all the bolts, and bars, and manacles became dust. I was no longer a servant, a serf, or a slave. There was for me no master in all the wide world-not even in infinite space.

I was free-free to think, to express my thoughts-free to live to my own ideal-free to use all my faculties, all my senses-free to spread imagination's wings-free to investigate, to guess and dream and hope-free to judge and determine for myself-free to reject all ignorant and cruel creeds, all the "inspired" books that savages have produced, and all the barbarous legends of the past-free from popes and priests-free from all the "called" and "set apart"-free from sanctified mistakes and holy lies-free from the fear of eternal pain-free from the winged monsters of the night-free from devils, ghosts, and gods.

For the first time I was free. There were no prohibited places in all the realms of thought-no air, no space, where fancy could not spread her painted wings-no chains for my limbs-no lashes for my back-no fires for my flesh-no master's frown or threat-no following another's steps-no need to bow, or cringe, or crawl, or utter lying words. I was free. I stood erect and fearlessly, joyously, faced all worlds.

And then my heart was filled with gratitude, with thankfulness, and went out in love to all the heroes, the thinkers who gave their lives for the liberty of hand and brain-for the freedom of labor and thought-to those who proudly mounted scaffold's stairs-to those whose flesh was scarred and torn-to those by fire consumed-to all the wise, the good, the brave of every land, whose thoughts and deeds have given freedom to the sons of men. And then I vowed to grasp the torch that they had held, and hold it high, that light might conquer darkness still.

Robert Green Ingersoll (August 11, 1833 – July 21, 1899)

Civil War veteran, American political leader, and orator.

Space Colony Art from the 1970s

Art from summer studies at NASA Ames in the 1970s.

I really love these old drawings of space colonies.  They remind me of the great Tomorrow Land episodes from The Wonderful World of Disney.

Art Post: More of The Same For Now

I didn't do a lot of sketching this week but here's what I have.

Sketch4

Above are a couple of friends that let me sketch them while playing a game of Catan.  I probably spent about five to ten minutes on each.

Sketch5

Above is a close-up of Madame X by John Singer and a sketch I'm not quite happy with.  I'm kind of cheating posting it since I probably sketched this a month ago but I'm going back to this painting to try again later so I wanted to post my first attempt.

I've posted the full painting before; I love the emotion and delicacy of the painting, something I don't feel I captured in my sketch.

Working with watercolors this week and sketching my friends playing music so next week's entry should be better.

Art Post: Coffee House Gesture Drawing

I've been reading Basic Figure Drawing Techniques by Greg Albert and Chapter Two is on gesture drawing or scribble drawing.

The basic idea behind gesture drawing is to quickly sketch out your subject to capture the essence of the moment, to help you properly size the subject to the paper you are using and to help you get warmed up and comfortable with figure drawing in general.

Sketch

I doubt I'll post anymore here, unless to show progress, but I wanted to document the various processes I'm learning.

The problem I've had is finding models to sketch, so I went to the local mega coffee chain and sketched people in line and sitting in the cafe.  Not a lot of action going on but a good variety of people.  Looks like they were hiding from me but that wasn't the case - I promise.

First Inaugural Art Post

So I've decided to force myself to draw on a weekly basis (for various reasons) and will post some of what I feel to be the best on my site by each Tuesday.  I hope you enjoy.  Constructive comments are welcomed.

Ap1_02-22-11

I've been sketching various works to get back into the groove and above is an example.

The lovely piece is El Sueño by A.Cortina (The original is on top with my sketch underneath, obviously)

I plan for the posts to vary, evolve and get better as I improve and get new ideas and interests.  Let me know what you enjoy and want to see more of!

Thank you,

Jason

One of America's best rock bands is no more. The White Stripes end.

Whitestripes

The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.

It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.

When Elephant came out I bought it on CD, then I bought it on vinyl and played it on my Mom's old JCPenney record player for months straight.
